Been told that car has been serviced using 10/40 oil , is there any probs putting in 5W/30 oil when topping up?

Cant see why not, if your only topping up, ford even state that in their handbook.
Might be worth a quick call to the local VX stealer to check though.
i have to admit i have done it in the past without issue, but its only a top up not a litre though!

Why did they use 10/40 anyway? It should be 5/30 unless your changing it every 8-10k
Now I need a turbo to keep up!

^^I'd first get the right stuff put in there, if that is the wrong grade. Sharpish
As for topping up with different grade, I definitely wouldn't do that personally. No sir.

Vauxhall always put 10/40 in Mine for some reason

But as long as you are putting Fully Synthetic in with Fully synthetic Etc then all will be fine, If you start mixing Mineral Oils Etc with fully synthetic, then you will have degraded the oils lubrication/Temperature quality's Etc

Strangely enough I phoned 3 different dealers today and they all tell me it's 10W/40, so asked why as have heard it's supposed to be 5W/30 and the answer was, that Vectras from 2006 are recommened to have the 5W/30, so god knows who's right!!

Mate... i would stick to 5w/30 you cant go wrong!
on flea bay its cheap enough... albeit my local VX want £12.75 per litre...

So next service request...er no demand 5w/30. worth the investment.

For those with CDTIs, then the experts on here (GSI3.2 and a few others) always recommend you use Vauxhall's own oil for that engine, and nothing else.
That engine in particular needs very careful attention with oils (not saying the other ones in the range don't, but the CDTI is the most delicate some would say).

Have to say , one of the concerns I have is that using the thinner oil i.e the 5W30 ; may end up topping up a lot more frequent, but at the same time I guess it's more advantageous as far as lubrication goes for the timing chain / oil jet business and also tried running my old Omega 2001, 2.2 (Z22XE) I had on thinner oil and rattled a good 'un so went back to Vx Semi- synthetic and all was well.
