    Default Tax free shopping

Off to the States soon and want to get a new Digital Camera. What are the savings at airport shops. Do you just save the VAT or is there greater savings to be made.

Was thinking about waiting till I was at the airport before I bought one.

My experience of airport duty free is that they are cheaper than the high street but not always by the full amount of the vat and not always that much cheaper (sometimes better) than online. Having said that I got my first digital camera there a few years ago having looked at in the shop, then checked online for cheapest prices elsewhere. Other good thing about Dixons at least, is they do something like 90 days money back guarantee . Had a mate who used to get the newest model video, use it for almost 3 months, then take it back (to any branch) for a refund, and get the next new one on the next trip out of the country.

Where are you going in the states? With the dollar/pound as it is you get pretty good deals over there. Just need to be aware that some digital camers have a US-only warranty.

Have you seen their website? http://www.dixonstaxfree.co.uk/index...roup=11&title=

Most yes, but not all. Nikon cover lenses internationally but not digital cameras, for instance. http://support.nikontech.com/cgi-bin...i=&p_topview=1. It's worth checking - I got a good saving on a Nikon lens in NY at Christmas.

However, if it's cheap enough it's often worth it. Are you going to New York?

Off to Florida. I'm only after a point and shoot. There's significant savings on the web, just wanted to know if they were substantially discounted.

I work at Gatwick Airport, and you don't save much to be honest. You don't pay the VAT but the base price is normally higher.

If you're going to buy it in USA, don't forget that your personal allowance (for import duty) is £145, so you "could" be asked to pay duty on anything over that value (just as Wayne Rooney's missus found out).

There are loads of camera stores in Florida (presume your going to Orlando) some you can haggle the prices down a little. Walmart have a selection of compact cameras but in general, most places are cheaper than back here even at duty free prices.
There are a few places on International drive so don't rush into the first shop you see, bide your time and compare against each other.

I echo what Fil says, if you're going to buy around the I Drive area, certainly don't buy in the first shop you see until you get a good feel for prices...pre haggling prices can be a little high!

    And don't forget sales tax!

And have a rough idea of what model you want before you go.

These stores are like Comet/Curry's here, except they are cheap !

Look on these 2 websites, compare prices to here, and find one of the stores in Florida. I have bought laptops, Ipods, BOSE Sounddock and everything in US with no prob with import tax. If you do go into one of the stores above just be careful as they sometimes show the price with the 'Mail-In rebate coupons' already off. However the salespeople are really good and will help you out with everything.

I am fairly sure that there is currently some sort of investigation into airport outlet prices by OFT or similar.

VAT free doesn't mean cheaper than the high street / online. Also, sometimes you don't get the same warranty or after service, mainly because you bought it 'abroad'.

If I was you, I would buy it in the US. Prices are normally cheaper than here, and I am sure a man of your persuasion would be able to convince HMC+E that no import duty was payable. There are easy things to do to make them think you're took it with you in the first place (and therefore not bother with it).

Ultimately, you have to do some research - you could save loads....
