Default 1.7 CDTi - any good?

OK not a Vec question, but I'm thinking of getting a Corsa 1.7 CDTi (125) SRi as a second car.

Are the 1.7s as problematic as the 1.9s?
Is it another old Fiat unit, or something different?

    Cheers

The new 1.7CDTI is a corker compared to the 1.7CDTI used in the Astra/Meriva. It has had some very good reviews 0-60 in 9.3 seconds and 207lbs/ft of torque. May be related to the previous 1.7 CDTI Isuzu units, I don't know, but is not related to the Fiat 1.9's that have caused a number of people so many problems, or to any other Fiat engine AFAIK.

It may well find itself being used in the next Astra, especially if the 1.9's are going out of the window.

The 1.9CDTI engines currently used in the Vectra/Astra/Zafira are based on a Fiat design and the result of a now defunct collaboration between GM and Fiat, and similar to those used by Fiat in both Fiat and Alfa Romeo cars, and the same as those used by Saab, and others in the GM stable using the same platform as the Vectra.

Thanks for enlightening me. Fiat can make a 8l00dy good diesel engine when they put their mind to it. My Fiat Ducato 2.8JTD (Iveco engine, Fiat Sister company). 126500 miles on a 53 plate of hard abuse and apart from an injector wire breaking down at 100000, it hasn't missed a beat. Puts a lot of cars to shame on acceleration to. (127 bhp and 280 lb ft of torque)
