    Default I'm confused!

Have been ringing round local independants for price for 2nd service on my 1.9 cdti (56 plate with 26k). Have had varying prices so thought I'd ring main dealer to see how they compare. One wanted £235 . My local dealer want £185 and that includes a brake fluid change because it should be done every 2 years according to the book. That doesn't however include the fuel filter which according to the book should also be replaced every 2 years. They are saying that the cars mileage doesn't warrant changing the filter. Other dealers are quoting me prices inclusive of the fuel filter but then charging extra for a brake fluid change. So can anyone tell me 100% whether or not I need fuel filter or brake fluid or both doing. There is a real difference of opinion between dealers. Cheers all

Just bought my Haynes today, according to that:

Fuel filter - 18,000 miles or 2 years, whichever comes sooner (36,000/4 years for petrol engines)

Brake fluid - Every 2 years regardless of mileage (same for petrol engines).

That is cracking info cheers. Found local independant who will do service (incl. fuel filter) and brake fluid change for £170 so happy with that.

Had my car serviced the other day at an Independent ( 4yr,40.000mile service)

    Her are some parts prices:

    Oil Filter 2.30
    Air Filter 6.75
    Fuel Filter 7.70
    Spark Plugs 26.00
    5/30 synth oil x 4.25 litres 22.31

All parts price are + VAT

    Total service came to £148.12

I didn't think this was too bad.

So it seems that £170 including brake fluid change is a really good price. I am really careful where the car goes for any work doing and would never just put it in anywhere. I think I have to get a feeling that they know what they are talking about and that they will look after the car. I do get that feeling about this place but the only thing that concerns me is that he said he would put in 5w-40 oil. Checking out this at the moment coz I think it should be 5w-30. I think I am a bit of a control freak when it comes to the car. If they would let me stand and watch over them I probably would!!!

5W40 will be fine - the second number refers to the oil viscosity at 100 deg IIRC - just means it's guaranteed to stay thicker for longer
