Yep not BIG Brother just one of the greatest pieces of democracy protecting technology we've had the pleasure of working for us for a long time! Well at least since the Spitfire!
It finds Sh!t Bags in cars they've either stolen or can't be bothered to get the correct paper work/tax for. and possible Terror suspects for a start.

If this is Big Brother he's obviously the type to let you have half of his 10 pence mix up after school! (this quote circa 1979...bubblies,sherbet Dip Dabs and fizz bombs, also include Willy Wonkas liqourice sticks for extra memories.....)

Completely separate thing though Chris. The ANPR stuff is police related and they are the ones using it to catch criminals, untaxed/unisured/disqualified drivers etc.

Any road pricing/toll is a Government thing, nothing to do with the Police.

The SPECS cameras already exist, and usually on roadwork sections for good reason.

ANPR already covers our motorways. Makes a massive contribution to the 3000 arrests we make a year.

I found it strange how it was on the other lanes and the van was on the other motorway section. My works van is taxed and insured no problem . I work in traffic management so I am on the roads alot. Cheers for the info..

When the use of automatic number plate reading has helped with arresting offenders, what is the breakdown of the offence they have committed?? – I wonder who I would need to apply a FOI request to.
It would be interesting to see how they help, and truly if they do actually help in catching terrorist suspects.

However, I do wonder what further use this information gathering can have. Tracking of movements, personal driving routes etc etc. Where does this info gathering and processing stop? Can it be used to determine annual mileage driven, where etc etc? Is it covered by the Data Protection Act, as it is information about a car, and not necessarily about a person…

that sort of info would take a massive database to compile it, something which any government body does not have. DVLA have enough problems keeping track of which cars are taxed, owned by and insured. It would take a massive investment to achieve, and imo not worth it for what you actually get.

Roadside ANPR and speed camera's are only any good if the vehicle is registered to the correct person,so as usual the honest person who registers his/her car gets the fine, the dishonest person who doesn't gets away with it until a police car pulls them.
