    confused 1.9 CDTi intermittent stalling

This is my first post - so hi everyone!

I've got an 05 plate 1.9 CDTi 150, and the flipping thing has an intermittent stalling issue. It's been regularly serviced and has 41K on the clock. Currently used just on short journeys by the wife around town.

History: It first happened when it was still under warranty about a year ago, and under warranty we had a new inlet manifold gasket fitted which cured the problem for about 3 months.

Numerous visits back to the garage from then until 6 weeks ago when they said they had finally found the problem - diesel filters...weird thing is they were changed during the service in December, but this seemed to have worked until 2 weeks ago when it started to do it again!

It normally happens at low revs, like roundabouts and traffic lights. You can't restart with the key straight away, you have to wait between 30 and 60 seconds before it will start again. But, if you're quick you can jump start it before you stop - and this works.

Taken it back to the garage a few times over the last 2 weeks and they can't find a problem with it (although the idle is rough to me it's not to them). They say that there's a common fault which causes this issue, but won't do anything about it until they either get it to stall or something comes up on the computer - surely if it's a common fault they'll just fix it?

My main worry is that the car is no longer under warranty...any ideas gratefully received as I'm losing confidence in my local dealer.

No - however when the car is cold it's really lumpy...as soon as it's warm the idle is much smoother.

Anyone got any ideas about this - happened a few times yesterday...and now it's being fine!

It seems to be linked to damp / wet weather??!!

I had this problem on mine.. When i decelerated and coming to a standstill the engine would cut out.. Wouldnt restart straight away either... sometimes had to leave it for a cpl of minutes... Did it on and off over the course of a few months and then seemed to disappeared. I was gonna keep an eye on it, but had the inlet manifold changed due to the swirl valve rod. Been serviced since the cutting out issue and touch wood, never happened again.. So dunno what caused it really.

Sounds like the same problem...I'm sure the manifold was changed under warranty last December as part of the service / snag list I had built up.

Is there anyway to do a manual check on the swirl valve rod?

dont think that was the cause of the problem but swirl valve issues are known about by Vx, plenty of threads on here too.. Pop the engine cover off you'll see the swirl valve rod its a metal bar which goes across the 4 cylinders, check to see if its still on and if theres any build up of gunk around the 4 valves it sits on... If its faulty it'll either be off altogether or very loose or jammed. You can check this by getting someone to start the engine and see if it moves when started.

sounds daft but you say the car is only used fro short journeys? couple of reaons it could be doing it.

I wonder if the DPF has had a chance to regen lately? (drive for over 30 mins on motorway to clear it out)
How long does a tank of fuel lie in the tank? could be a crappy/old batch of fuel (I have had this)

I would try a fresh tank of V power diesel and a good blast down the motorway. With you saying it went when the filters were cleaned then returned it kinda suggests there could be a fueling issue.

I would also check the fuel cap, if the above fail to fix it then remove the fuel cap and retest, might be a vacuum issue.

    What's a DPF?

Where's the vacuum pipe for the fuel tank? I do remember that when I last filled it (a looong time ago) there was a sudden rush of air!
