Talking Got my 2.8T Elite Signum!

Firstly, apologies for not having any pictures yet - it's sheeting down with rain here and has been since I collected the car

Well, after you lot totally failed to talk me out of it I made the 4 hour drive down to Perry's of Dover on Saturday to collect my new baby. Ultra Blue, 2006/06, 35k and in near perfect condition

I'd been dealing with the Sales Manager by phone and email beforehand, but as with everything in this world, it's nigh on impossible to find a manager who can actually do the job he expects of his team - so after he'd looked over my old estate I was swiftly handed over to an 'ordinary' sales chap who knew what he was doing!

I had a very pleasant suprise with the road tax, of all things - I was expecting £400, but apparently this car was registered 2 weeks before the cutoff date in 2006, so it's only £210 now! They'd done all the paperwork ready, including the £400 tax, so then had sort out a £190 refund for me. It didn't seem difficult (from my point of view) to amend the balance due from me, but it took quite a conflab on their part to work it out... Anyway, I was left with a balance to pay of £3310. I asked if they'd round it down to £3300....but NO! That £10 was just too much, obviously!

So, we had some lunch and drove 4 hours back again! Mad, Sam called me. Probably right, I expect! But the Parker's guide price for this car was £12500 and I got it for £10,000.... A bargain worth driving for IMO So, my thoughts from my first day of ownership....

    Good Stuff
    • It is BLISTERINGLY quick! No turbo lag, purrs like a kitten and develops the power beautifully. I think I can safely say I won't ever go back to diesel again.
    • I like gadgets and this car has the lot. Sat Nav, MP3, dual zone climate control, heated seats, front and rear parking sensors, auto lights, auto wipers, auto dimming mirror...
    • The auto box is a pleasure to drive. Maybe slightly too eager to change down, but other than that it's amazing.

    Bad Stuff
    • Elite suspension is APPALLING! It's twitchy, and wallows around corners. Would be bad enough in a 1.8 - plain dangerous with 255bhp of 2.8T
    • They somehow lost the Navi CD... and when they tried to pinch one from another car it didn't work for some reason. So they've had to order a new one and they'll post it to me.
    • I miss the SRi steering wheel - the standard wheel is noticeably thinner and plasticy.
    • They were really kind and put 4 brand new NCT-5's on it for me

    Planned Mods...so far
    • Suspension. Top priority. PI -45mm springs and Bilstein B6 dampers.
    • Airbox & filter. I know it's a different airbox, so may do the VXR update instead - a 60mm hole drilled beside the existing air intake. And a Pipercross filter - they seem to be favoured by the 2.8T owners.
    • Wheels - not sure yet whether the alloys I had on the estate will suit this car - I'll have to try them and see. The Elite alloys are growing on me, so I may just change the tyres. Watch this space.
    • SRi or VXR steering wheel
    • Dark headlights and rear lights
    • Body colour V grille
    • Colour code the plastic front splitter
    • Door pins - I'm tempted to go for the gloss black Richbrook ones this time, there's no chrome anywhere else in the car.

    AND.....

It's returned 32mpg so far, which given the current price difference between petrol and diesel, and the fact I only ever got 39 or 40 out of my CDTi, means it won't cost much more to run

Well done matey, as long as you are happy thats the main thing and it seems they have a bit of customer care which can be rare in some of the dealers nowadays.

    Good Luck with the mods

I got the richbook black gloss door pins and i think they look nice as well

I think... Being totally honest... It's probably going to end up looking very similar to yours, Duncan.

Oh, I know what I wanted to ask... The driver's side wing mirror glass is different to the passenger side, and also different to the driver's side glass on my estate. It's still got the panoramic section at the end, but it's got a black plastic border.

Does the signum have an auto dimming wing mirror, or is it an aftermarket part?
