nope.. the 2.2's that i see regularly are still on their original chains at 48K and 52K respectively...If you over service them, like very 10,000 miles, they last very well..

Hi, what do you lads think to this, 2.2 Direct Signum with 56k on the clock (late 2003 model), just after I purchased the car, it would start quiet then after about 30 min of driving would develop a hum (like a dry brg), some times just after start up it would have a (light) high pitch rattle, this I passed off as exhaust resonance as it came and went, but after reading some of the posts regarding the aux belt adjuster being dicky (started by Duncan I think) I went and purchased a new one to be safe (not fitted yet), but now the rattle has developed, at start up it has got really loud (like a tin of marbles ), and after 2-3 secs the rattle instantly drops in volume and intensity to more refined rattle (if thats possible ) but is there constantly and getting louder, I'am now thinking cam chain and adjuster, but please lads, tell me it's the aux belt adjuster about to give up and depart.

it could be either.. and the only way to tell is if you slip the aux belt off and start the car... if it's not there then, you'll know it's the tensioner, but i've a nasty feeling it'll be the chain..

    Red face

Just changed the aux belt tensioner and belt, and as Mark guessed the rattles still there , so, it needs a chain change , do the balance shaft chains give much trouble and would it be worth doing at the same time, or is it not necessary, just being cautious .

would anyone recommend a timing chain change at 115,000 miles? in a 2.2 DTi? At my risk I know, but it sounds ok.
