    Default Which Camera Detector?

    Okay guys,

I'm looking for a good speed camera detector.

Currently I'm using the Speed camera database from www.pocketgps.co.uk with my TomTom Sat nav.

I'm interested to know what everyone else uses as I'm looking at getting a stand alone Speed camera detector as I don't always have my TomTom with me?

    Thanks

I don't have a standalone detector, but for the times you do have your TomTom with you, I'd recommend the CheckPoint software and database over the pocketgps one. Obviously neither will physically detect a camera like an actual detector, but in terms of usability and ease of adding/removing cameras, the CheckPoint wins hands down for me.

Just seen that PocketGPS are going to charge for these updates. £2 per month or £16 for the year. Looks like £16 well spent...

Will just have to keep my PDA with me at all times

I'd still look at the CheckPoint one Richard. It's free and it's updated constantly by the people using it - you just sync to the server when you get home.

I too am using the www.pocketgps.co.uk poi files and they do a version with individual files for each speed limit. This is really good - as, when the gong sounds, a quick glance at the TomTom screen shows an icon in the top left corner, displaying the correct speed limit for that particular camera.....no need to panic - looking around for a speed limit signs on lampposts etc.

<not wishing to sound like he's banging on about it! > But the CheckPoint files have this as well (files for each speed limit) and you can add a voice warning so that it warns you of upcoming cameras. I don't even need to look at the screen. I have it so that 30 secs before (a 30mph camera for example) I have a voice saying "Warning, approaching speed camera - 30mph". If at 20 secs before I'm travelling too fast I get another warning "Reduce speed to 30mph." 5 secs before the camera I get a final one "Speed camera - 30mph". If at that point I'm travelling too fast then I deserve to be flashed for being such a numpty!!!

    And it's totally free!

Back to Orginal question - Before I got my PDA/TT I was using a Snooper S4 Neo. Awesome bit of kit. wasn't a laser detector so still legal, all the stuff is done using GPS. Never missed a camera, and had the advantage of warning of danger areas & speed Limits.

Now if TT/CheckPOInt etc could use their database, I would be happy to pay for that!!

I use an Inforad GPS camera detector, it's cheap (£80) and a little black box that sits on your dash, got a couple of LEDs and buttons, it updates via a USB cable and software on the PC and you can add mobile sites and points of interest as you're driving along or directly add them to the database via the PC.

It's saved me a few points I can tell you!

Where'd you get that from? His website states that 'POIplace is free and will remain free.'
