Default Road Tax and how its going up

Just came across this. Thought it looked quite scary at first for cars such as the VXR, but I dont think its too bad.

Looking at band L, the way I read it is appears that in 2010/11 the first year of the cars life will be £750 . But then every year after that it will drop down to £430 . This seams a bit odd . Why would they do that? Just to stop new car sales?
Thats the way I read it from here.

TBH m8 the government is actually being put under pressure by motoring groups regarding duty and the rise in road tax has been halted. The fall is probably a prediction of car use decreasing as statistically more people are either walking or taking public transport and more so to reduce new cars coming on to our roads.

But there is a conflict of interest here; it was these same people who introduced the new registration system in the first place to quickly get to the end of the old registration system.

Assuming this goes ahead, the plan here is to try to stop new car sales of the most polluting cars. The 1st year penalty starts to kick in at the 161-170g/km band - an extra 75 quid for the first year.
Bands A-G don't have any penalty for the first year (or just a fiver then for band G), so these are the cars the Government want us to buy new, eventually filtering through to the second hand market.

The first year rate includes the "showroom tax" that was introduced/proposed at the last budget. Whether these materialise remains to be seen...

Basically another tax on car ownership on top of all the others we already pay, a load of nonsense based on "green" credentials IMO.
