    Default Hmmm - Should I or shouldn't I...

    Ok, having thoughts...

I've got just over a year left in the RAF, and my current plans (if I'm sucessful...) will take me to New Zealand for 14 months learning to fly. Obviously at that point I'll sell my car, but given the way the market is at the moment it wouldn't be worth much, even if it is a popular model (1.9 150 SRi...)

It'll be paid off in about 6 months, but is taking a third of my salary every month as I only bought it a year ago. Now, two things have happened in the past few days to make me rethink things a bit...

Firstly, my best mate took me out for a spin in his dad's Chysler Crossfire:

(I'd just spent a few horus detailing it...)

Now, I don't like the look of the car on the outside or inside (I can barely fit into it...) but I've never been in something that had a V6 engine (apart form a VW minibus...) and my god does it shift... Whenever I get to 4000 rpm in my diesel I generally change gear - in this thing it was halfway through the range and gave it more beans as it carried on...

Second, I saw that Pricey had made the switch to a stunning V6 Signum (ok, so I'm a little bit jealous...)

I've had quite a few Vectra B's in the past, and now I'm thinking I might go back there. I can sell my Vectra C as it is, and with the difference between what I owe on it and the cost of a 2.6 Vectra CDX, I'd end up owing nothing, instead of paying off another 3 grand over the next 6 months. Fuel usage would be much higher, but petrol is cheaper, I'd be paying a lot less on the car each month, and could save it instead for when I leave the RAF. Plus, as Pricey says, you only live once...

    Couple of examples...

    http://atsearch.autotrader.co.uk/www...00822310971776

Lots of things I'd miss about the C, but the B has a few things it doesn't, and I know they're good cars...

    Any thoughts appreciated...

Firstly, i wouldn't touch any Crysler/dodge with a barge pole. Reason why is i've had a few as hire cars in the states and the build quality is simply 5hi7e ! Yeah, ok- they have some toys in them but they'll drop apart when they get to MOT age !
(IIRC, Vid had a Crossfire. Can't remember why he got shut of it though.)
Secondly, why take a step backwards and buy an old car ?
The second car you picked has 104,000 miles on it ! It's been round the world and back !
Hang on to yours until the very last minute, you never know whats coming round the corner.
You MAY just be able to afford that dream without being rash !
Hang on in there buddy, you just never know.

Fil - wasn't planning on buying a Crossfire - was just using that as one of the reasons I'm looking at the petrol V6.. I can't stand the way it looks inside or outside...

There is also the very little known 'Design' trim, which were all black with cream leather interiors and the wooden dash trim replaced with carbonfibre...

I'd get my Xenon headlights back too...

Anyone know the power output of the 2.6's....?

IIRc they were about 190BHP.....thou a good standard one has seen over 200 on the rollers..

I have to agree with FIL thou.. it would be a very backwards step..104,000 isn't a lot on the V6, but it's about 60% through it's useful life and wouldn't be far off wanting a clutch.. Also, it's very hard to find one thats been well cared for..you could end up with a money pit

Very true, I suppose you would only buy V6 for one reason....."0" to "60"......!!!

I suppose I'm looking for something to have a bit of cheap fun with, and if i can find one with a low-ish mileage it would be good... I knwo it's a step backwoards, and there could be issues with maintenance but in the long run it oculd still end up cheaper than paying off my current one, even if it did need a new clutch at some point...
