    Default Track rod ends

Hey everyone, new guy here to the site and in need of advice.

I have a 1998 2.0 Vectra GLS estate that appears to have a prob.

My car is fitted with new tyres correctly inflated and recently wheel alined and with 88k on the clock. However, i have noticed when i go round corners the wheels squeek and when i turn right i get a rythmical squeek but appears to only happen when on full lock.

I have consulted the haynes manual and that says to do the 12,6 and 9,3 rocking check of the wheel. When i do this my wheel moves quite a lot and i can hear a knocking sound. According to the manual i think it could be the steering track rod ball joint.

Please can anyone tell a beginer if they can do the job, if this is the problem, how to fix the problem, if its worth replacing any other bushes etc at the same time, if the wheels need re aligning after and if any special equipment is required. I have read about specialist equipment been required for removal of subfames so that they are realined properly, does this apply here?

Please help im a confused newbie.

The track rod ends are not to difficult to change, if that is the problem. But you will need to have it re-tracked again. I don,t think you will need to remove the subframe though. Is there any play when you "wobble" the wheels 12/6- 9/3.

Hi ed, thanks for the reply.

To answer your question yes there is a lot of play when i wobble the wheel at 9/3. There is more on the nearside than the offside but the nearside knocks when i do it. Also if i hold the black plastic boot protector towards the inside of the car it feels as though something is moving inside. Ive also discovered that the anti roll bar links rubber bush is split (dont know if this has a bearing on things or not).

Assuming the track rods have gone, can someone who has little experience and not done it before do the job? Especially as i only have axel stands? Do i need to replace anything else or need grease where it goes into the wheel etc?

Sorry to be a pain but im having to do jobs myself due to lack of money but dont want to cause a bigger problem.

    All help greatfully received

    Cheers mate

It is not too difficult to change the track rod ends. But If I was you, with limited experiance I would seek futher advice to what is acctualy wrong with your motor. In the end you might save money by not changing something that does not need replacing.

Track rod ends are fairly easy, they cost about £13 quid from a motor factor. They have 2 types of steering rack fitted. Your tie rod end will have 2 initials stamped on it to denote which type it is... Rough guide to doing it is jack car up, axle stand under it... Think its a 19mm or 18mm socket to undo the nut. Turn it half a turn then whack plenty of WD40 all over it. Undo nut and then the whole lot lifts upwards away from it.. If you find the whole shaft starts turning as you undo it, put pressure on the top of the track rod end which should lock it in place while you undo it.

To remove the track rod end from the arm use a spanner on the 'flats of it to hold it still and undo the lock nut at the end of it half a turn. This will then allow the track rod end to be screwed off. Turn the lock nut back half a turn to put it back in the original position and also count how many complete turns you unscrew the track rod end before it falls off. The new one should turn on very nearly the same amount... Pinch the lock nut tight up against the new track rod end. Doing it this way should be a near enough measurement to the old one, but please get the tracking realigned in case of manufacturing tolerances being different between old and new..
