    Default Electrifying Garage

    My Project for Monday

I like a lot of people have a garage in a compound block, absolutely useless without electric, and the possibility of electric being installed is prohibitevely expensive, then I had a good idea...

Electric is being installed, via Solar Power

With the new and much improved low energy bulbs available now, I can illuminate the garage with 2 x 20 Watt bulbs, (Equivelent of 200 Watt conventional bulb), power a drill, radio and a possibly a small fridge, (Overflow of ready Chilled beers)

Oh and a 150 Watt PIR controlled floodlight on the front of the garage that will last for 5 mins a time, just to show the other garage owners what a clever sod I am

Total cost for this small installation is going to be around £210, payback period is 12 years, but the usefullness far outweighs the cost, I will after all be able to use the garage now

Maximum power draw will be a maximum of 250 Watts, for 2 hours, more than enough for when I have to do anything with the car, the majority of the time it will be just the 20 or 40 Watt lighting. However the system can be easily upgraded if needs be.

Anyone else undertaken something like this? I will put my very 1st "How To" when completed, detailing costs, suppliers, power calculations and ease of fitting...

I'll be interested to read the How To as I've got a garage en-bloc. Although I don't know how long a set of solar panels would last before their nicked/smashed.

Good luck with the install. Keep us posted.

Me too. Was expecting to see the garage door wired to the National Grid or something!

Thats a good idea!! My garage is at the end of my garden with no power but it does have a sloping roof which would be ideal!!

Not solar powered stuff - I have just rewired my garage though. Started from scratch and ripped out all the old slightly dodgy wiring that was there, fitted an RCD split load consumer unit and put in new sockets, strip lights, and outside weather proof socket etc. - much better than it was.

Be interested to see your progress with the solar stuff, not because I might use that for anything, just interested.
