    Default Thinking of a change..

with the cost of petrol and running costs for the vec.. i am considdering downsizing to something like a astra sporthatch...
want something with a bit of grunt and go so looking at the cdti 150 xp..with leather if i could find one
my vec is a 2.0t nav..tints/lowered/irmy grill/irmy pedals and door pins.. 2004/04 plate 40k.. full body respray 6 months ago
what sort of price would i expect for mine..trade or private?
and what sort of price can i get a newer sporthatch for.. anything from 06 on really... and 10 grand or under..

Have a watch of last weeks top gear. It prooves an interesting concept.

The V8 m3 returned better fuel economy than the prius around the track. Thats because bigger enginged cars return better fuel economy at a given speed. This is because a 2.0T engine, will find it easier to cruise along at 50 for example, than say a 1.6

If you drive the car gently, and keep it off boost, it will return just as good fuel economy as an astra petrol.

And if you're going to be buying diesel, well theres no hiding the fact that diesel costs much more and you've got to do serious miles to make the difference back. Especially when you factor in the potential turbo failure problems of the 1.9 TD engine and any potential repair bills.

another example of this was the VXR / Gsi thread, with some owners saying they got better fuel economy in the VXR.

also thinking of something a little newer.. as the value will plummit even further the longer i leave it.. so why theres still some value in the car i wont have to make up as much in difference to sale price of my vec to a newer car!

Your car is valued at around 5k. I personally think that's optimistic given current attitudes to larger petrol engined cars (especially turbos)

If you were selling privately some people will also wonder about the full respray (IMO)

Problem as well is that the Astra sport hatch is a popular car and seems to hold its value. A diesel one even more so, though the economics of owning and running a diesel no longer add up as well as they used to. Looking at Autotrader you should get a decent sport hatch for about 10-11k.

Problem is though, private buyers are like to think you're lieing and be put off.

At the moment, with prices the way they are, it's not until you are doing 30000 miles a year that Diesel starts to become more economical.

    Keep the Vec.

Its all how you drive it, The 2.0t can be very frugal on the juice if you are easy on the right foot.

    45.3 mpg from a 2.0T!

Incredible - Did you reset the computer before doing a quiet, flat, straight road at 56mph in 6th?

My car does 90% motorway miles and I've never been able to exceed 33mpg average (I never reset the computer) I don't boot it either, into top at the first opportunity.
