Default VX Say I need new rear brakes on my 57 plate Sri?

    Hi,

Picked my 57 Plate Vectra Sri 1.8 VVT around 10 days ago from The Car People. At the time I asked them to look at the rear brakes as I heard a slight noise. Anyway, when I picked it up they said they cleaned the brakes even though they looked the same to me.
This week I was not happy so took it into VX dealer to check rear brakes, they have told me they need replacing due to corrosion as the car must have stood for a while.

Anyway, car booked into The Car People tomorrow as they said they would "look at them". Now I want them swapping, if VX say they need doing then I want them doing. Now if they do not do them and tell me they are okay what should I do?

    Thanks,
    Rik

What is it that's supposedly corroded enough that warrants replacement? The discs? If it's the discs that have a bit of rust on the surface then that's quite normal after a car sitting around for a while. Before you start to get anything replaced, I'd drive the car for a while as ordinarily that'll soon remove any surface rust on a disc.

If it's something else, or more serious, then it depends on exactly what it is as to whether it warrants changing parts.

VX said the whole lot, discs and pads. The fronts are fine, look like new. But the rears are all rusty and full of grooves, they clean up a little but have many rusty grooves/rings on still. Really look shabby and nothing like the fronts.
Its got 30 days cover with The Car People so they should change them for free. I get the feeling they will not replace them but if VX say they need doing then I will fight The Car People to get them done. VX only wanted £176 yesterday which I thought was good, they knew that it would go back to TCP though as its under their cover.

What would you do if TCP say no?

If they're badly grooved then that's reason enough to replace them. I discovered the same on my rears recently and changed the discs and pads.

Yep, they should be replacing them - or knocking the money off/refunding - as they shouldn't be supplying a car with discs in that condition, especially when you raised it at the time.

Well apart from shaking somebody there roughly around the throat , if it was me and they were point blank refusing to do anything, although I'd be pushing them as hard as I could to make sure they did, then I'd simply bite the bullet, get a disc and pad kit from Vx for £60+VAT and change the pads/discs myself. If you haven't got the tools (needs a rewind tool for starters) and/or know-how to do it, I'm sure there'd be a member near you that could maybe help.

If they need doing TCP will do them. I am just worried they will say they are okay which they are clearly not. Hopefully I am worrying about nothing and they will sort them tomorrow.

As for the price I thought that was good, on our old 307 SW Pug wanted £290 for the rears.

As a 57 reg Vectra, this should still be covered under original warranty, and even better under the first year
I'd advise the seller of that fact and to make a claim for the rear discs under that
I'd also go back to the original VX dealership and ask if they will raise a claim with VX Retailer Warranties, based on the report and quote they prepared earlier

Both of my Vectras have suffered rear brake disc failure within the first year before 35K miles, and both were replaced under warranty, which includes new pads and discs

Car people are terrible for this

I test drove an ST220 there and it was obvious from the brake noise it had been stood for a long while.

I thought brakes are wear and tear items and will not be covered under warrenty?
