    Unhappy Wheel Bearing

Finally got the car checked out regarding Rumbling noise under the bonnet.

Technician took it for a quick test drive, during which time I bombarded him with veccy questions (turned out to be a pretty one sided conversation)

He figured it wasn't timing belt but the wheel bearings. So I thought thats a good thing, wheel bearings can't be more expensive than a timing belt.

    £221 FITTED

    and thats just for ONE.

So the car's booked in for monday, thought I'd get squeeky alternator belt changed too at the same time (£30 fitted)

now, I know roughly what a wheel bearing is, but how does it wear our/get damaged ???

    Suj

I would go to an independent garange ... should cost no more than about £100 fitted.

Wheel bearing used to be a metal ring filled with steel ball (bearings) coated in lots of grease

I've got a habit of buying OEM parts.

Does any third party make these and are they just as good.
I think its a bit steep too. But dont know where to go from here ?

If the bearings[ I belive they are rollers as to balls] wear then there becomes "play", that, if you like allows the rollers, to "rattle" about rather than to run true in the inner and outer races.thus making the rumbleing noise.
It sounds a lot of money to change the bearing though.

suj you will probably find the bearings from an independant garage are the same as the ones being fitted by vaux at 2/3/4 times the price.

which arnold clark so as i know to avoid it as thats way tooooo much for bearings to be fitted.

Don't think that the bearings are of the old press out sort, think you have to have the whole hub assembly
