Seems quite a common thing with the BMW's usually a sign of water getting into the oil (headgasket most common) or oil never being changed in it's life.

Can't make out what is wrong on the top pic, but I'm guessing it's been run on veg oil given a couple of recent threads?

It's a petrol and so cannot be run of veggie.

The head is completely covered with gunge, about 1/4 inch thick.

I am in the process of changing the head gasket, and just thought it was the messiest head I'd seen, so thought I'd take a couple of pics.

On some VX if not all cars there is a unit that cools both water and oil, when this fails you get sludge in the header tank bottle so that could be the cause, as for the rocker cover sludge at a guess either cheap oil of mixing mineral with synthetic, looking at it though unless you do a full strip some more of it from the bottom will block passages again when it gets moving again, I'd love to see what resides in the sump.

I don't want to see, but feel I must.

There is a separate oil cooler coil at the front.
