Default Alarm sounder - Why is it so quiet??

Just out of curiosity... does anyone know why vauxhall put a cat one alarm system into it's cars and then put the siren in the boot where it is woefully quiet and inadequate??

Is there a mod to remedy this?

    Good answer!!!

If I leave a window open and lock the car on the drive the alarm sometimes goes off and I can hardly hear it through the double glazing, definitely not if the telly's on!!... what chance do you have eh?

Question: Is the volume of factory-fitted car alarms, and the length of time they sound governed by law or European directive or some other form of politically-correct nonsense?

I imagine there are plenty of aftermarket alternatives though, if you need to beef up your standard alarm.

    - as much use as a fart in a spacesuit! Actually, that probably at least has some use!

Alarm sounder is just pants in the Vectra and Signum.

The length of time is dictated I believe - and possibly the decibel level, but the one in the Vectra / Signum must be waaaay below of any max decibel limit allowed.

just found this on the Southwark Council website (http://www.southwark.gov.uk/YourServ...oiseAlarm.html)...

"The Noise Team get many calls about noisy car alarms. This is what we can do:
    • An Alarm that has been sounding for more than five minutes and is affecting local residents is considered by law to be a nuisance.
    • Once a nuisance has been established, the Council can serve a Noise Abatement Notice on the owner of the vehicle.
    • If the owner cannot be located, we place a Notice directly on the vehicle. This Notice requires the owner to deactivate the alarm within 45 minutes.
    • We do everything possible to find the owners of noisy vehicles. If the owner has been found, a reasonable length of time is given for the alarm to be turned off, and we will extend the one hour time limit if necessary.
    • If a car alarm has been sounding for more than one hour and we are unable to find the owner, we will arrange for the vehicle to be opened so the alarm can be switched off. We take every care not to cause damage and use specialist companies contracted to us. If it's not possible to unlock a door, we may have to break a window.
    • After entering a vehicle we make sure that it's left secure or immobilised.
    • A notice is placed inside the vehicle (not in plain site to passers-by) to inform the owner of our actions.
    • We reclaim our costs from the owners of vehicles and may prosecute them. A successful prosecution may result in a fine.
    Legal Position - vehicle alarms

The Noise and Statutory Nuisances Act 1993 makes noise in the street a Statutory Nuisance. Click the link to find out more about this Act of Parliament."

As for an aftermarket alarm, I have just been reading a thread on here (http://forum.vectra-c.com/showthread.php?t=43865) somebody has said that canbus wiring makes it really difficult to fit aftermarket alarms.

    There is just no hope....

is there a possibility of repositioning the alarm so it would be heard , under the bonnet or somewhere equally well placed

Or just replace the speaker? With a louder one, running from an amp if need be!

This has been discussed a few times before; IIRC someone posted up the reason for the placement in the boot is due to complaints about water ingress when it was previously under the bonnet
