    Age and the way that the fuel is injected.

    The direct has a higher bhp figure than the non-direct, but is harder to modify (less tuners do goodies for the direct).

    isnt the direct also chain driven not belt?

    There both the same lump, just the heads are different for fueling.

    Fundemantally, in the in-direct method petrol is injected into the air waiting in the inlet port area, then the mix is ingested into the engine when the inlet valve opens..
    The direct injection injects fuel directly into the power cylinder with the incoming air. Changes can be made to both quantity and fuel injection timing with DI for better performance, higher mpg and better emissions control
