    Default airbag problem

had my vectra 2.0 dti into vauxhall today. they tightened up my steering wheel as the nut had become loose. they also told me that the airbag was not the correct one and it could deploy at any time. and i needed to pay £500 to have a new one fitted. i didn,t get them to fit a new one as i,ve been ripped off by vauxhall before. what i wold like to know how could the wrong airbag be fitted as the centre fits perfect any ideas?

On what basis have they made the 'diagnosis' that it's the 'wrong' airbag? First question to ask them i.e. get technical.

i dont pick up my car until tommorrow and the guy i spoke to didn't know why it was the wrong airbag. i'm just lost on how an incorrect airbag would fit and also how it could deploy at anytime. cheers

So he didn't know why it was wrong? I think you made the right choice not to have it done. Time to investigate further.

Yep, sounds very iffy. I'd get an exact written description from them as to what they're saying is the issue - not just that it's the 'wrong' airbag. They need to give their specific reasons why they seem to think this. Sounds a bit suspicious to me!

Let us know what their reasons are and then folks can advise you further - more than likely we'll be rolling around on the floor at what they tell you! lol

Note to the above. The only thing I could think that could possibly be the case is that the airbag has been replaced at some point (do you know if the car has had a front end shunt?) and whoever has put the airbag in has used the wrong one. In 2003 the airbags changed from having one connector to having two connectors, so if a 2003 onwards airbag has been fitted to your 2002 car then yes, that's not right.

Right, so the scenario in my last post is a possibility for the moment.

You can disconnect the battery, let the car sit for 20 minutes then disconnect the airbag, although when you then reconnect the battery and start the car it will bring up the airbag warning light I'm sure. You'd have to get that turned off with Tech 2 when you get your new one fitted (if it needs a new one). Obviously it means driving around with no airbag for that time, but probably better than having one go off unexpectedly!!

You need to find out for definite if the reason they are giving is a genuine one i.e. two plug connector airbag put into a one connector car before you start to consider disconnecting your airbags.

When you ask them, just ask them the reasons - don't say anything about the number of connectors on the airbags and see what they say.

You will need a thin flat screwdriver, but a strong one at that, can be fidly if you dont know what your doing. You have to stick a screwdriver into the hole at the back(one on each side of the wheel) and you have to get hold of a long pin and push it either up or down and pull on the bag at the same time until you hear a click, follow procedure on other side of wheel too!

Then behind the bag it will either have one or two connectors, with a small flat screwdriver, you will need to pull ot a small flimsy pin like connector (in the middle of the socket) and then that connector will come out of the airbag!

Also, if the wrong airbag was fitted, was the airbag light on before you took it into Vx? Apparently, I have been told on a previous ocassion by Vx Stealers that if you put the "wrong" airbag on a car the light will not go out as they have different tech settings??

    HTH!
