    Default Body Mass Index

    So...... was in Boots the other day and jumped onto their 'Fit' machine to see where I'm at (bit like a rolling road for humans, except you dont get strapped down)..... never done it before and here are my results...

    Weight = 12st/12lb (81.8KG)
    Height = 5'11.6"

    Body Mass Index = 24.7 (Ideal B.M.I. for my weight/height is between 18.5 and 25)

    Body Fat = 16.1% (Excellent is 17.5%, Good is 23.5%, Average is 26.6%, Poor is 32.9%)
    Body Fat Mass = 13.1 KG

    So I'm super excellent in the fat range

    Anyone else had theirs done recently ?

    It's a load of rubbish anyway - I've got guys at work who are fairly tall and big but definitely not fat, but it says they're obese. Takes no account of muscle or anything...

    That's my excuse anyway...

    BMI has been discredited in the last few years, when they found that some very fit people were clinically obese, but it was all muscle!
    As it happens, mine was 33.2 when Mr diabetes came to call, after losing huge amounts of weight, I'm now 27.1, which the quack says is still over the top, but better than it used to be!

    What they said! - takes no account of muscular/athletically built people. When I was super fit and doing loads of cycling/fitness stuff I always came up on the charts as well into the overweight band - yeah right! Even now it has me as right on the border between okay and overweight at a BMI of 25! I may be 'only' 5' 7" and weigh 11.5 st but overweight?, nah I don't think so - it simply doesn't take into account a build of a person. The Body Fat measurement is certainly a better indication. With your reading Steve you must've been starving yourself?! lol or very stressed.

    At the end of the day it is a ready reckoner that will be right about 80% of the time.

    So 80% right for little effort. Got to be good as a guide, but clearly some people will not suit it.
