    Default Veg oil as fuel

Ok guys thus may have been heard before but i cant find it.

Its costing all of us a huge amount at the mo for fuel.
For me its £75 a week.

So my question is can the 1.9 CDTi run on veg oil instead of Diesel. Will it need any conversion. Should it bee mixed with any thing else.

I have done a google and found loads of ppl recomend Rape oil from tesco's

has any one slse do this or can they shed some more light on this so we can all run abit cheaper.

    Thanks
    Alex.

yes it can be done but you will need a converter under the bonnet to get the oil up to temp and if you get oil from a chippy you will need to filter it a few times

I've recently read about some potential problems with diesel made from vegetable oil and biodiesel in general.

It seems that bacteria can grow in the tank causing a sludgy build up which can get into the fuel system and cause blockages. Clearly not a good thing.

I know people have raved about biofuels but I'm not convinced at the longer term benefits. Common rail diesels are highly complex beasts and the use of biofuel could lead to trouble in the future.

Of course, it might be that I'm utterly wrong. It has been known!

Any warranty you might have will be invalidated if you use veg oil in there.
Some cars will run on it if you want to take the chance, but with CDTI - you'd be taking a huge risk.
It will probably cause problems to CDTI - very expensive ones.

in a word, NO NO and NO...

the veg oil doesn't provide the same lubrication for the high pressure pump as DERV, so it will wreck it...

veg oil is only really for DTi's fitted with a conversion kit.. common rail diesels mustn't use it...

before you try it, think about this.. is it worth saving £30 a fill on fuel if you could cause £3-4000 worth of damage to your car?...

as for the DTi's they CAN run on it IF they have the kit fitted, BUT they must then be serviced every 5,000 miles as the bio won't blend in the engine oil and that also causes problems..also, you MUST change the fuel filter after you switch to Bio as the bio 'scours' all the cr4p out of the tank and deposits it in the filter.. so you need to keep the fule filter changed every 5,000 as well..

even new oil isn't in a state that you can just add it to your tank..it needs a seperate tank to the DERV as you have to start on DERV, then switch to bio.. and before you turn off it's best to switch back to DERV.. Veg oil dosen't burn the same as Biodeisel until it's heated, so you have to fit a preheater to the seperate veg oil line ( with seperate filter) before it can be burnt..

Bio deisel and veg oil are completly different (bio deisel containing methanol to crack the fatty acids in it and having been extensively pre filtered) and have to be treated as such..

for more info, and expert advice may i suggest you contact dieselveg www.dieselveg.co.uk or another of the biofuel producers...

If you have £2.5K to spare you can now buy machines you can use at home which will produce you 50 litres of bio fuel per day as an automatic process...

But, in short, for a CDTi the answer is really a straight NO to veg oil fuel... Bio diesel thou is possible, but only when blended with a high amount of DERV to provide the pump lube..

there are few threads on here about this.. all warn dont do it on the CDTi. Something to do with the pressure and the pump.. well the chaps here seem to be spot on 99% of the time so with that in mind i would risk it.
albeit i understand the cost of dam diesel at the moment. just refuelled yesterday on motorway services...ouch.. reset the OBC.. doing 60mph on M5 for around 20miles, OBC said 80ish MPG? i think i have a bug in the electrical to coin a phrase.... i wish!

here's a thought being around hundreds of trucks a night a very large percentage of newer trucks use the common rail system also a lot of older ones and theres thousands of them up and down the country using bio derv?? my mate works for tesco and all of there trucks are on bio...so is there a great risk as long as its fitted by a profesional company after seeking advise from a diesel specialist.

What do you mean by 'bio'?

There are specific terms that describe TOTALLY different products.

Diesel - mineral diesel from crude oil
Bio Diesel - mix of mineral diesel and veg derived fuel (eg B20 - 20% veggie, 80% mineral diesel)
Veg fuel - eg rape seed oil, etc (various sources for this oil product)

Standard road diesel conforming to BS:EN 590 can include up to 5% veg derived fuel.

Look into the modern low sulpur fuel, i think you'll find its the other way around. And that vegy oil is more lubricating. But I agree, no, no ,no. My Mums brother makes chip ranges, we'll used the veg oil in cars before, it clogs filters, and there're really reluntant to start in the winter and thats at 50% diesel. Also, it doesn't work out that much cheaper by the time you've done everything, chan6ged the feul filter a couple of times, paid the tax etc....
