Monday just gone, I was cycling to work into the centre of York. I was going down a hill and a Focus pulled into a side street, going across my path. As I was going quite quick in the cycle lane ( not that quick, this is me we are talking about here!) I panicked, thought this is gonna hurt and yanked on the brakes and swerved. I managed to miss the focus by millimetres, but locked up my wheels and flying, most probably very unmajestically, over the handlebars.
I picked myself up and my elbows both hurt like hell. The guy in the focus stopped, apologised as he had been flashed through the traffic and couldnt see me for a wagon being in the way. After checking that my bike was okay I pushed the bike to work as I didnt fancy riding it, locked it up and sat at my desk when the pain really kicked in!
The boss said "A&E now, no arguments" as kept I shrugging it off saying I had just jarred my elbows. The wife and 5 month old son turned up 1/2 hour later and off we went to the hospital.
three hours later, I was clearly shown X-Rays of my arms showing the one of the three bones that go between the wrist and the elbow in each arm had been cracked, the right completey, the left half way through. Luckily the bones had held in place, so all that was needed is slings, rest and painkillers. I'm not to drive for 6 weeks and will need physio afterwards, 2 weeks (fully paid) off work.
Well not having the use of your arms is quite an adventure I can tell you. The worst part is cleaning yourself after going to the loo. The wife, who has been brilliant, did say thats where she draws the line and if I really needed seeing to then to stand naked in the garden and she would kindly get the pressure washer out!!
Well Monday was pain filled nightmare, tuesday saw a little improvemnt, Wednesday saw me make a cup of tea and lift toast to my mouth. Yesterday was even better with me actually making the toast and today I managed to type this post!! I am amazed how quickly bones heal! Still very sore and it does take a lot of effort to do the slightest thing, but mobility is returning, I just cant bear weight yet. Thats the worst part, I cant pick up and play with our 5 month old son, who is used to having Daddy feed, bath and bed everyday, but its not forever.
