Default Not happy with the trumpet in the airbox

I had the airbox off tonight to have another look inside.

I couldn't believe how small the trumpet goes to inside the box.

Now I am considering just cutting it out, but would need some sort of grinder to take the inside lip off where it meets the airflow meter. I am replacing the throttle body with one 10mm bigger, but it seems like it will be a waste of time if it can't suck more air in the first place. Either that or just get some form of induction kit.

On a related topic, does anyone know if the airflow meter on the 3.2 will fit my 2.2? As this is the next restriction in size I can see, and I imagine the 3.2 one is bigger?

Any thoughts, suggestions or opinions welcome.

    yep.. don't don't don't...simple as..

the intake trumpet is there to provide a smooth linear airflow over the airflow meter..remove it and you get a tumbling mass of air which will give weird airflow readings actually making it perform WORSE than it can...

the same for the airflow meter.. it will still pass the same volume of air, but the bigger diameter throttle body will mean it just flows at a greater velocity through the MAF than it would have with the smaller TB..fitting the 3.2 MAF will just make it flow the same volume of air SLOWER which will play with the MAF readings and throw the engine into running overrich ..

a DECENT remap will take into account the values of the existing MAF as the fuelling map is designed...

Leave it all well alone.. there is more harm here than good.. It's all really down to aerodynamics theory really..

the only way to get more air in effectively, is to force it in.. be brave, put a hump in the bonnet and whack a supercharger on it...

I took that out in my old astra coupe, it was just clipped in and didn't need any cutting at all
Now I need a turbo to keep up!

Mate, I would love a SC! Would it be worth fitting a larger trumpet?

I wonder if thats why you get some running issues with induction kits, as the airflow isn't smooth?

Some of that is also the fact they draw in a lot of hot air from under the bonnet, unlike the cold air into the air box.

i'd just leave it as standard for now... bigger trumpet diameter also affects how the air moves..(the lenght reflects the torque the engine makes.. the induction lenght is carefully calculated)

yep, open inductions do draw hot air in, and hot air is the enemy.. it won't carry as much oxygen and so burns with less power..Closed systems fair better as they have a cold air feed ( denser air, more ability to carry oxygen, more power) But the additional bends rob power, and the corrugated hoses they use create surface shear of the airflow and don't provide a smooth airflow ( thats why all the internals of a VX hoses are smooth ) which again just meets the OEM MAF sensor as a spalling tumbling mass which won't give a good smooth reading

Removing it will not affect the flow rate just the pressure drop at the MAF and how smooth.

But on a separate note, the air box mod is one thing removing a part of the air box which is there to prevent turbulent airflow would be daft as at greater engine speeds the air flow is far more violent and hence it starts to heat up - enough to cause poor performance due to the less dense air.

Ok you guys win, I'll leave it all alone .

Cheers for the advice! I was just worried that I could get more power when I have it mapped with a different setup, but it seems gains will be minimal if any!

At least I'll save a few quid!! But I'm sure I can think of something else to put it towards!

    Thanks again!

Did you spot the mesh on the MAF I was on about Vid?

Yes I saw that mate, not sure if there is much to gain though mate, looks fairly thin to me? Has anyone else done it before?
