    Unhappy Failed MOT on emissions

Well, it failed but suppose it could be worse.

The emissions were too high by 0.03 % and he tried it three times but it didn't get any lower.

As I have had an oil usage issue lately the tester suggested running some CAT Cleaner through it as the high oil consumption could have left a residue on the Lambda sensor, causing the reading to be wrong.

I'm a bit surprised because the warning light has never come on, tester said that can happen.

So, does it sound feasbile and has anyone used a CAT Cleaner product before ?

Oh, I got an advisory for the back box which Drinky has warned me about anyway

    Bummer! What engine? 1.8?

On my MOT yesterday it was a bit close on the emissions - they had to do it a few times to get it under - but at least I knew the reason for that was me having the Stage 3 with the larger injectors and sports cat.

Are there any mods on yours that could have contributed to the readings?

It's a 1.8 petrol 120 well, 122 I think lol There are no mods to the engine it's bog standard and done 70k miles.Duncan, he said it was allowed to be up to 1.03% and mine was 1.06%Did they rev your engine continously for ages ? they must have had mine on a very fast idle for 15 mins, don't think it will like that !

I looked in your profile and it didn't give the engine size so I looked back at some further posts and 1.8 was the last one I could see.

They had to give it a bit of revving/fast idling to get the figure to pass, but nothing like 15 minutes!

lol, I can see why you thought that - but IIRC they don't do an emissions test on diesels?, just the smoke test?

Honestly, they had a lad in the car holding the rev's at somewhere around 3 to 4k RPM constantly for easily 15 mins I was on the verge of going over and asking them what they were doing that for !!

I'll try this Catclean stuff (if I can find it) and if that doesn't work it may need a lambda sensor and hopefully not the CAT itself !

If I take it back tomorrow they will retest it for free, so if this stuff works it will be ok !

Cataclean is available on ebay, can't remember who sells it. It makes a definite difference, give it a go.

Chuck a load of fuel cleaner stuff in it too, they don't need to hold it that high for that long, just normally long enough for the test - unless they were doing it to try to get the readings lower?
Now I need a turbo to keep up!

He did say they did their best to get it down, maybe that's why they did it.

I will try this Catclean stuff, just hope I can get some quickly ! saw some on ebay for about 14 quid.

I put fuel injector cleaner through it about 4k miles ago.

Problem now is that I shouldn't be driving the thing around now, even though it's not a safety issue (it's not like the brakes don't work etc ! ) a fail is a fail and the last thing I need now is hassell of that nature

No, last thing you want is an ANPR camera pinging you and showing that you have no MOT.

Question for you and also for those in the know - when does your current MOT run out?, and does the current MOT cover you until that expires, even though it's failed, or does the act of failing the test basically make the current MOT (if it has time left on it) void?
