    Default Shameful secrets of the 70's

    Shameful secrets of the 70's, just watching it on Sky 3 now.
    They just raced a Gran Torino, all 5.8 litres of it,

    up against a Corsa 1.2;

    No prizes for guessing which one is quickest, off the mark and top end !!!

    Still don't want the Corsa though.

    Lol, tis true, the Torino is one of the slowest "sports cars" ever made apparently, with a 0-60 time of over 12 seconds and a top end of 103 I think it was, christ even my tractors quicker than that !!!

    But I still want the Torino, lol.

    It's all relative, isn't it. Modern small cars are as quick as larger-engined cars from days gone by. The first Golf GTI was about 75bhp IIRC and is seen by some as the first/one of the first so-called 'hot hatches' which is these days would be regarded as decidedly lukewarm. A modern 1-litre Toyota Yaris or Corsa has more power and is quicker than my old 1996 Astra 1.4.

    As Quentin Wilson says "How things have changed for our young people. In my day (he is in his 50's) the most you could hope for was a Ford Corsair which got to 60mph and then exploded, young people these days can borrow their mother's Honda Jazz and do 110mph".

    When asked about car chases during filming of that 'classic' 70's series 'The Professionals' Lewis Collins said that they were all done in 2nd gear in that 70's icon a Ford Capri to give the desired impression of high speed and high engine noise, at the expense of the odd clutch or two"

    I sometimes do think though that today's mainstream cars can be a victory for substance over style, whereas in the past the reverse was true, where cars looked good but were unreliable, and often badly built.
