    Default Tyres - Legal Limit?

I have been sold a set of wheels and tyres over the internet and they have arrived today. I was told that 2 of the tyres had 4mm of tread however I have found that one of these is on the markers.

Can someone confirm that the marker blocks are where the legal limit is?

See photos below. Can you please give me an opinion as to whether it looks/sounds like i've been told incorrect information or I am checking the tyres incorrectly?

    Thanks

The marker blocks are where the manufacturer recommends you should change the tyres, and not necessarily the legal limit.

Get a tread gauge from Halfrauds if your worried. Dont look like they are the legal limit to me but probably not far off needing changing. Opposite the block on the sidewall does it show TWI ? Legal limit is 1.6mm - suicide in the wet imo.

could it be the 3mm limit for use in europe?? if they were sold at 4mm it looks like the tyre is ever so slightly higher than the marker?

as Rob said, a guage is a good investment

Looks like they may be worn more in the centre - possibly run at too high a pressure for a while? Either way they look to me like the will need changing soon.

1.6mm is the legal lowest limit, i always thought that the markers were set at that depth for easy identification......

"The legal minimum tread depth for car tyres in the United Kingdom and the European Community is 1.6mm throughout a continuous band comprising the central three quarters of the breadth of tread and round the entire outer circumference of the tyre."

In other wrds, you can get away with it if the edges are feathered, as long as the centre 3/4 is above the limit.

The only 4mm tread is possibly on the inside edge, the centre and the outside are less.Don't forget most new tyres only have 7-8 mm of tread so if these so be only half worn not worn out!
