similar thing happened to me about 10 years ago, but it was a f*cking idiot on a motorbike, he ran the red whilst shooting up the inside of an HGV, so i had no chance of seeing him and he cannot of had any kind of view of anything because of the HGV. anyway he took the front front end of my beloved capri with him as he made it to the other side of the lights minus his bike and flying 6 foot in the air. both vehicle written off he broke his leg, dislocated his shoulder and busted a couple of ribs.

anyway his insurance tried to say it was my fault, they tried to claim for everything, damages compensation loss of earnings the lot. fortunately i had 5 or 6 witnesses all saying that he had jumped the red. in the end his insurance company got told where they could stick their claims, i got a full payout on the car which i then bought back for £50.

    Did the police attend ?

You need your passenger as a witness, don't worry about him/her claiming it will all be in the same claim and will reinforce your version of events, not that there should be any need anyway, 206 Sat/Sun PM/AM it's easy to see who has jumped what etc.
