rolleyes Pollen Filter retaining clips - rubbish quality

Well, just been out to replace the Pollen Filter for the first time (myself doing it rather than garage) and one of the plastic retaining clips just burst. To say that these clips are flimsy is an understatement. Anyways I was not all that concerned because when the other one goes (as it surely will over the years) I can just wedge a lil bit of foam to hold the filter in place (it cannot really move that much anyway even without being clipped in place).
As good measure I gave a few squirts of anti bacterial cleaner straight into the heater intake with the air con running to get rid of any bugs that may be about.
To gain access to the pollen filter you have to raise a flap (on the panel known as the water deflector) that is located above it, surely the two places that this splits in order to be able to lift is a potential area for leaking water into the area where the pollen filter is. I know there is a big drain hole at the bottom but surely some of the water is going to make it onto the pollen filter. Does not look like a very sound design to me.

broke one of mine too, but as you said, the filter stays put anyway!

slighty OT - when I went to vx to get the new pollen filter I was given a paper filter (dealer searched with my reg). The old one I took out was the charcoal type. Does it matter what sort is used? why have paper and charcoal versions?

The charcoal filters are better for reduces smells etc, the paper one's just filter dust etc.

Yep, the one I got was a paper filter and the one taken out was a charcoal one but it does not really bother me. What is of more concern though is that I had the car serviced in May 2007 at a Vx Dealers and on the receipt was a part number and price for the pollen filter. This was the exact part number for the filter I fitted at the weekend but as I said, the filter I took out was a carbon one. This leads me to suspect that the dealer has either made a mistake with the part number on the service receipt or has not replaced the filter as they have stated they have according to the receipt. I think you can guess which one I suspect to be the case. It may be that the spec. has changed in the last year but the part number is the same, in which case my apologies to the Vx dealer.

Had this with my Signum at my Dealers-
Apparently if you have climate control variant then its a paper filter as the CC will go into recirculation mode when it detects a nasty niff outside.
    Standard aircon needs the charcoal.

But not all CC cars have the pollution sensor fitted.

    Yep...same problem here too.
Clips are crap, but the filter stays put regardless once its wedged in.
I changed my filter too over the weekend, yep I got the paper tack too!

Didnt know they did a carbon one....the one I took out of my car was well and truly scr3w3d!

Here, take a look...this old one looks as though it has never been changed.

When I bought the new one it is as white as snow. Hopefully this will slowley get rid of the crappy smell, whcih i think this old filter didnt help with at all!!
