    Default Tyre test

Thanks to Michelin I am now conducting a test of two slightly different Michelin tyres on my Vectra C 3.0 V6 CDTI

I used to have Michelin HX MXM 205/55 R16 91V tyres on my Vectra B SRI 140, and I was so impressed with them I also bought them when I had my Mondeo Mk3 Ghia TDCI

However, the Vectra C came with Good Year tyres and the NCT5 215/50 R17 95W XL are over-priced, with numerous horror stories over bad batches
    I then changed to the Eagle F1 GSD3 225/45 R17 94W XL

Michelin have supplied me with two tyres to test, which have both been fitted to the front
The rears are still a pair of identical Eagle F1 94W XL

    On the nearside :
    Michelin SP Primacy 225/45 R17 94W XL
This is a three compound tyre with an assymetric pattern

    On the offside :
    Michelin SXE Primacy 225/45 R17 91Y
This is a six compound tyre with the same assymetric pattern

Their tread pattern is also identical to that of the HP Primacy, which is due to be replaced later this year
The SP Primacy looks a chunkier tyre, compared to the SXE Primacy, but this may be due to the different construction method

Initially handling is very different to that of the Good Year NCT5, which was previously fitted on the front
The directional control is slightly improved and sharper
Ride quality is slightly worse, but that is due to the lower profile and higher tyre pressures
Road noise is much less than the NCT5 as well

I will report back on wet handling, when it happens!

One of my contracts is to perform tests on tyres from cars involved in serious accidents
The tyres are sent to Aberdeen University where we use the equipment there to perform the tests
One of our main contacts is with Michelin tyres and they provide most of the "base" data
We also do a range of other tests to compare tyre performance

Occasionally we are asked to perform trials on new tyres just before they are launched on the market
I last did a trial for Michelin, also on the HP Primacy before it was launched
At the time I had Michelin HX MXM tyres and didn't like the HP Primacy

But how on earth can you give a detailed, or even accurate, report on the performance/handling of a tyre when you have two different types fitted to the front wheels?!

Plus personally I'd be seriously concerned about wet weather performance differing between the two given a comparatively high front end load that the 3.0 diesel lump will give.

From a personal point of view, I had 4 Michelin Primacy HP 215/50 R 17 91W on my 3.2, and they were the worst tyre I have ever come accross. The wear was high, the grip mediocre and they have proven impossible to balance properly.

Thankfully the fronts have worn out and I now have Pirrelli P7s on the front - and even Kwik Fit can balance thos with no trouble at all.

probably having 2 different tyres with different compounds is to see which 1 will give more miles and to see how they wear across the whole tyres. as when he has finished with michelin will strip then down for there reports

The two front tyres are almost identical when you look at their tread impact
Even under load the total area and shape of the contact surface area is identical
The main difference is in their construction

The tyres are being removed after 5,000 miles, which should be about 8 weeks
Another pair of tyres will then fitted, but in reverse, and again removed after 5,000 miles
The results will then be compared

    These tyres were removed today

Fitted to the front at 52652 miles
Removed at 59859 miles, net 6207 miles
That's pretty awful when you compare the Good Year NCT5 tyres lasted 13357 miles on the front

I am now back on a full set of Good Year Eagle F1 GSD3 tyres, the new tyres fitted to the rear and the old rears swapped to the front

I've got a week to decide what the next test is for, it's either :
    Pirelli P Zero Rosso
    or
    Michelin Primacy
    or
    Continental Sport Contact 3

Again, each tyre will be slightly different and fitted to the front

Time for this years tyre test
    On the nearside :
    Michelin Primacy HP 225/45 R17 94W XL
This is a three compound tyre with an assymetric pattern

    On the offside :
    Michelin Primacy HHE 225/45 R17 94W XL
This is a new four compound tyre with the same assymetric pattern, due to be released from June 2011

All was going well on the dry test
However, on examining the offside tyre it was found to be a complete failure

It was replaced by another new identical tyre
This passed the dry test and we moved on to the wet test
However, on examing the offside tyre it too was found to be a complete failure

As a result all tyres have now been removed and the two failed ones sent for examination

There was a lot of head scratching from the technicians from Michelin
At least it wasn't just my car, as the same issue occured on eleven of the twelve such tyres
The tyres were specifically produced for these tests

Normally after these tests we then get to keep a set and report back
However, that did not happen this time, the original Good Year tyres being put back on my car (rather embarrassing for Michelin)
I was then advised there will be another test scheduled as soon as possible and if not before the end of June then I will receive two free tyres through National Tyres
