    Default Changes At Work

I was having a think about this last night, I reckon over the last 20 years my job has become a fair bit harder to do.....

1 - Traffic Volume, I estimate this to be 40% higher now

2 - Traffic Lights, I know there are now 50% more of them locally

3 - Cost's, my 1st car was £24 pw on finance, it's now £60 pw at a lower interest rate, fuel was £1.50 for derv, now £6.00

4 - People, customers used to be jolly and happy 95% of the time and pedestrians used to look before crossing the road, now customers have to shout at each other even though they are only 3 ft away from each other and nobody seems to look before walking in the road.

5 - Earning's, although fares have risen over the time I still earn about the same, and this was said to me by ex-cabbies who'd quit before I started.

6 - General satisfaction, no job is fun all the time, but I used to enjoy the job back then, now I dread having to go out.

Anyone else have a similar story in what they do?

Very similar, I do ALOT of miles, traffic is hell, cameras everywhere. Now cover more machine types than I did, with less training. We do more shifts and more standby. I do earn more than I did, but I work 30% more than I did, however the cost of living has increased more than that.
So, in short, I do more miles, more hours, and more machines, and am worse off. Great eh....

VV i feel your pain. i was an AA man for 17 years, loved the job for the first 15 years then the job changed, the customers changed, the roads steadily got busier but we were expected to do more jobs, and sell membership for more than others were selling it for.

So i left in 2006 and went to work for the Highways Agency. I thought this was the best move ever but due to having a totally useless, unprofessional and vindictive boss i now hate the job. i go for the money, for the smiles that some days bring and the sense of purpose i feel on the drive home.

Somewhere there must be something positive about every job, it just takes a bit of searching sometimes.

    Mick.

Thats the one reason I stay in the job, if I go work for others I just know "he's" gonna be waiting for me, and after 23 yrs away from "him" and an adult rather than a fresh faced kid I reckon "he" could well end up on his back.
