    Default Insurance 'producer' question..

    Hi,

Having got pulled over by the Police earlier this week, the policeman performed all the PNC checks etc, and then gave me a slip to take my insurance documents and driving licence into the station.

My question is, what is the point or how accurate is the in car insurance database checking 'thing' they have, as it seems to me like a bit of a pointless exercise when he told me everything seemed to be in order but said a 'producer' was necessary.

Also, do they take copies or just look at them?

As the duty traffic cop, now and again you find that a car is showing as 'insurance not held', even though there is a policy.
This sometimes happens if you have recently renewed your insurance, changed companies etc etc.
Can also be an admin error on the part of the insurance company, getting a digit of your reg wrong.
Your car reg is ABC123A and is insured but shows as 'insurance not held' because your insurance company have your reg as ABC123B.

The insurance database is a superb piece of kit bbut as with any database it is only as good as the infoi that is put on it.
It is run and maintained by the Motor Insurance Bureau but if the insurance companies don't update them then they can't update the database.

Of course all the insurance Co's are required to do it but as with any big firm a few get recorded incorrectly or slip through the net.

If everything was 'in order' and you have still been given a producer then I can't really see the point in this.

If you have a look on the form HO/RT1 (the producer) you may see two boxes 'Check Details' or 'Record Details'

Check is just a look over your documents to make sure they are all OK, Record is just that and the officer in the station will write down details of your documents.

It is not usual practice to make copies but some forces do.

Just out of interest the Metropolitan Police have stopped doing producers, and no longer complete the HO/RT2's (the form they complete at the station when you take your producer in) because all the info is now all available via PNC. It wont be long before the rest of the country follow suit.

    Hopefully that answers your question!

I asked him at the time if there was a problem with my insurance and he said no and that he would just like to see them. Still not sure why, seems a bit of an 'old fashioned' way of doing it, but hey!

When I took all the doc's into the station they copied down some of the policy numbers etc, so maybe they will check if they are still valid/live maybe?

When I was at the desk a WPC walked in and said ''What did you get pulled over for?" so I replied speeding and she said "i'm not suprised the way you have just pulled into the carpark". I wasn't even going fast, must have one of them faces lately!

It depends on which document the officer wants to see
The PNC check allows check and verify for :
    Driving Licence
    Insurance
    MoT

It might be that some, or all, of what you have said has raised suspicions and doesn't quiet match what the PNC has returned

I agree with what sonic has said, most constabularies have stopped issuing Ho/RT1 and can now process this at the roadside by radio or data check
However, officers should still be carrying, or have access to Ho/RT1 incase the radio or data check facility fails
Most Scottish Police officers have to do this, as there are still many radio dead spots
