    Default Chain or Belt?

    Hi All

New user herem first post, so be gentle...

My 2.2 SRI has now done 72,000 miles without fault, and will hopefully go on for another few years yet. Great car, does all that I need.

BUT does the 2.2 have a timing chain or a cam belt (and if its a belt, do I need to change it?)

Vx typically vague on this, hoping you can help me out.

be very careful mate,i had a vectra sri 150 which has the same 2.2 engine and the cam chain snapped at 33500 miles.result one wrecked engine!.i was very lucky as vauxhall sorted it free of charge.good job as it needed new cylinder head, valves, pistons, oil pump, cam chain and lots of other parts.im led to belive about a couple of grands worth.once sorted i got rid of the car and bought the signum which in my opinion is far better.this problem is common on this engine, something to do with the oil spray that lubricates the cam chain.you have been warned.

Yes you are correct, but I beleive that Vauxhall have sorted out the problems with later versions. best to check when the mods were introduced and check the dates against the age of your motor for peace of mind. Or you can just change it to be safer if you wish!!

This was a problem on the early 2.2 engines and mostly affected veccy b and astra's. Vauxhall added larger oil sprays so that they wouldnt clog up so as long as you do regular service and oil change you should be fine.

Welcome to the site by the way.

    Graeme is right

The spray hole blocked due to dirt deposits thus reducing lubricating oil onto the chain, hence breakages. Spray holes improved later by VX

Regular servicing with quality oil should prevent this problem occuring.
