This is a new one on me. I take it, this is for later models, as i never have noticed. does this happen when its dry too??
I have noticed on mine that the rear one regulates itself, depending on how quick front ones go.

think the rear one only comes on in reverse if you have the front ones activated ie on full or intermitent

On rain sensor wipers I'm pretty sure the fronts have to be activated i.e. stalk up one notch for the rear to do the sweep in reverse. I'd need to check next time I'm in mine. With the rain sensor wipers the rear is then also controlled from that i.e. the frequency of sweep will change according to what the fronts are doing.

Thanks Duncan. I wasn't aware that the rear wipers worked in tandem with the fronts in auto-sensing mode, as I thought they were fully independent of them, and non-sensing. I learn something new every day

As for the rears starting up on their own when reversing in the rain I thought it may have been an automatic function like the automatic closure of windows that are open if the doors are locked and it starts raining.

    - up once - the back wiper comes on - down once - nothing. So my guess is its linked to the rain sensitivity. Never left it on for more than one wipe at a time so never really checked the frequency thing...
