    Default Tyre Rant!!

Right Today I decided to get a pair of new tyres for my car as I noticed one was very very close to the limit. Firstly no where round me seems to keep the 235/40/18's I want. So I have to settle for 225/40/18's - yes I know thats the correct size anyway!. With mine being the 3.0 CDTi I really need the XL rated ones or at the very least 91w's.

First place I arrive at says yes we have couple for you to choose from! Khumo 712's, Falken 452's, F1's and conti's. All XL. So I ask for the 452's, wait 20 mins to be told they don't have them. Ok don't worry I don't want the Khumos so I will find some elsewhere. Off to Frome I drive, Only place in frome say all they have is Khumo 712's. Ok well it will have to be them then! They fit them for £160. I pay the man, check the invoice to discover they are not XL as I asked for but 88W or dangerous on my car as I pointed out. The only others they had were Hanook's or something at £210! No thanks. So I am back to where I started..... Back to the first place who then tell me all of theirs were 88w's too

Why do tyre places ask for the size but not the load rating? I mean, I asked for XL but got 88W if I had not checked then it would probably ended up with a bang followed by a big repair bill. I just wonder how many people they have done this too? Who can I complain too about this?

I'm hoping my guardian angel will arrange something for me at the end of next week or I'm stuffed for PVS!

why didn't you get 225/45/18 as they will fill the arches better and get a more smoother ride

I have a similar issue with our Galaxy. It needs reinforced tyres. I think it's up to you to point out you need these as most tyre dealers will just try to shift whatever they have in stock. I always stress reinforced or extra load when getting quotes.

Didn't get anything yet glynn, hoping my 235/40/18's will arrive.
Marc - I did point it out to the muppets, they fitted 88w's anyway.

I prefer the way they look. Thats all really. When he put the 225/40/18's on they looked wrong imo as mine isn't lowered.

The XL tyres have reinforced sidewalls, and are needed on the v6 diesel due to the engine weight.

88 is the weight limit of the tyre. Mine needs a min of 91. If I had driven off I could have risked a major blow out and whatever could have gone with it. If I was you and just drove off, It could have been very dangerous.

Parapaul, not quite needed on the manual, but it is very close to the limit.
