    Default Tolls in France

I am driving from Eurotunnel to Vendee region in my car next week. Having only driven Cherbourg to Vendee before I have not experienced a toll road in France before.

Tomtom is taking me a route for Eurotunnel which includes toll roads. Will they all accept debit/credit cards or do i need to have notes and coins handy

    Cheers

Yes, they accept credit cards or cash. Well, every toll I have visited in France have accepted either. But i've not been to the west coast.

I would have thought they would accept CC

P.S Don't go too fast between toll booths as they time the distance and you can be fined for speeding - if you do fancy a blast (not that I could possible condone such action), stop for a rest somewhere.

First I've heard of this one in France, If that were the case I'd have been pulled many times, but maybe Ive been lucky.

However, there are more and more camera's appearing every time I go across which has helped me get a free life membership to gpsworld's speedcam databases. Speedlimits are a touch higher anyway, also beware the police do like to hide in the hedges with speedcams and tend to be out in force on weekends especially on Sundays, but I've never seen any on motorways other than the standard Gatso and Truvello cams.

I have a holiday (Gite) in France and the wife and I go over very frequently. 7/8 times a year. IMO you are better off paying cash at the tolls, it will work out cheaper, though most cards are accepted. Most of the toll charges are quite reasonable, and the roads are superb, you wont believe how little road noise there is on most of the roads. Tolls tend to be just on the main routes, with quite a few not requiring payment especially up round the NW and down in the SW of france.

Many drivers are not aware that it is compulsary to carry a spare set of bulbs in France, I haven't bothered myself in this car, and though I have been stopped a couple of times for normal paperwork checks I was never asked to show them, ie. never mentioned. As long as you put some Eurolites on your dipped lamps you'll be okay. Garages dont open long hours like over here and many (off main route) stores and garages dont open on Sundays, the way it should be here!
Make use of the good free Screen cleaning wash equipment at the garages, you'll need it! else you wont be able to see out of the screen.
Dont forget to take out some EU breakdown cover if you dont already have it, and of course ensure you take have your E111 medical card.

We are over there ourselves again for 3 weeks from the 7th June, I just hope the weather picks up a little. Enjoy your trip!

We had a close call going to Millau last year. The Gendarmes were sat behind the toll booths, presumably waiting for a signal and tugging sll those who'd treated the Autoroute like the Mulsanne straight.

Thankfully, we stopped for Deisel, otherwise I'd have been relieved of a few euros too....

Oh, and as said before, the speed cameras are springing up all over the place.
