    Default Engine Warning Light

    Hi all,

My father bought my Signum 2.0DTi Elegance on a 54 plate, seems to be running ok, possibly a little 'noisey'. But the engine warnign light is on and a local Main-Dealer has diagnosed that it must be a knackered ECU and want £1700+vat to fix it.

Any ideas if this is right, or if it could be something else?

    Thanks,
    Harvey

the ECU is part of the fuel pump and they are very pricey..

my advice.. get a 2nd opinion at another main dealers, so you can avoid getting ripped off..

does it run okay other than being a bit 'noisy'?..

    Hi GSi 3.2,

I've not really had chance to drive it, but as a passenger in the back, I didn't really notice any problems.

Just seems a little rattly/tappety/noisey, but my current cars are a Clio Sport 172 and Astra 1.6 SXi, so not really comparing to another diesel.

I think I will try and get him to go somewhere else. He has been driving it for about 2-weeks with the light on and said he did not notice any difference!

Any good independents in Derby to try? Anything I can try and do? The dealer (not in Derby) has found some wiring I had installed (for a tune) when the car was mine, but I never fitted the unit. However, they've now said the tuning unit must have stuffed the ECU and are saying its got to be £1700+vat to replace the ECU!

    Thanks,
    HArvey

was the wiring for a VP44 tuning box then?..

if so, why not remove the wiring and repair the loom...it won't hurt and it may remove the fault light...

TBH, that's what we'll have to do, but the daft thing is I never even fitted the unit (VP44). However, I was hoping there would eb a 'common problem' I could fix it with ;-)

    Thanks,
    Harvey

if the 2nd opinion is it's not the pump then there's every chance we can help you fix it..

Cool, I'll go after a 2nd opinion then come back if its clear :-|

Just thought, been working with the wiring fitted for about 8-months, yet went into garage for a collapsed front spring, a week after coming back from the spring being fitted I went in it and saw that the light was on - wonder how long it had been on for?

Quick update, after chatting with my father, it seems that the dealer have said they could not find anything wrong yet and suggested it could be the ECU, but they said they'd not finished diagnostics yet!

Secondly, my father has said that the car will not rev past a certain engine speed and is a bit down on power. I hadn't experienced when sittign in as a passenger before because he drives rather 'conservatively' with passengers ;-)

So it seems its down on power, won't rev past a certain engine speed and has the warnign light on. None of this occurred for ther last eight months, but came on within a week of visiting a 'local mechanic' for a new road spring (other snapped!).
I am suspicious as to whether something has been upset during the swapping of the road spring - possible?

    Thanks,
    Harvey

not really as there's little the fitter could have done to upset it while just changing a spring..

it sounds like it's in 'limp home' mode to me, so it'll have a fault code stored......
