Default rear thud type sound-shocks or bushes?

    Hi all,

I have a CDTI SRI 2004, it sounds like my rear shocks have gone as everytime I go over a bump or a wobbly road (as they all are in Brum), the rear makes a weird sound, its really hard to explain, its like a something is loose and there is play in it and its hiting the body or some metal, but then at the same time, it makes a soft distand thud sound when I go over a speed bump (as there are sh*t loads of them in Brum too).

I have yet to get underneath the car to see if they have leaked, but I put my hand on them yesterday and they seemed dry enough, but I didnt really get to them properly.

Someone mentioned that these have a common problme with rear bushes, especially anti-roll bar bushes, is this what could be up with mine, how do I do a "DIY" check to see if it them?

Is this the signs of dodgy shock or are these my rear bushes, etc?

Please let me know before I change the wrong thing, as others have done.

Its not that severe, its just annoying and I like things to me right!

    Thanks.

if the dampers are dry, i wonder if what you hear is knocking top arm void bushes.. quite a common failing..

there may well eb a minimal degree of '12 and 6' wheel rock..best to try and pry the bush to see if it's slack..new one's are very taut and any play will let it knock..unlikely to be the rear antiroll bar bushes..more likely the top arm outer bushes.

looking at them won't tell you.. you need to move them to see if the are worn...

they are the outer bushes on the end of the top suspension arm on the rear suspension assy...a new arm is only £35 if they are worn..easier to swap the arm than swap the bush..

Sounds good. I know my way around cars a little so dont want to sound thick, but any chance of an image pointin me directly to it, instead of me going to every arm in sight? Thx.

Hi folks, I have taken my car to Vx for various bits and bobs to be done, and mentioned the rear noice, immediately they diagnosed that it sounds like the rear control arms.....lets see what they come up with! Will keep this forum updated with results!
