    Default Claiming a Tax refund

As I was out of work from mid Dec 07 to end April 08, does anyone know the easiest way to reclaim the overpaid tax for the year?? I was on PAYE until Dec and so I paid pro-rata as if I would be in employment for the whole tax year.

    TIA

When I claimed a few years ago, I worked out all the relevant figures (Gross pay, tax paid) from my P60's/P45's etc and worked out how much tax i SHOULD have paid. It was £400 I overpaid.

I then just took all relevant paperwork to the local tax office, and an advisor there helped me to sort it all out. IIRC it didn't take too long to get the money back, which I think was sent as a cheque. HTH

"In Theory" you should get the tax refunded automatical by HMRC or they might change your tax code for this year, but this will only happen once you previous employer has sent in their year of end tax information (P35), which they should have done by last Monday (19th). But if you call your local tax office and give them your name, address and National Insurance and have your P45 handy and ask about getting the tax refund it "should" happen a little quicker.
