    Default Oil (again)

Just been looking on the Castrol site for recommendations of which oil for my CDTi 150 Auto, they state 5/30 although two of my local dealers have told me that they are using 10/40.

    1) Which is the correct information?
    2) From new which oil would have been used in this car?
    3) Advantages/dis-advantages of using different grades?
    4) Can any damage be done from incorrect oils?

Seems a bit confusing as I'm not really that experienced in this department.

10W40 semi-syn is no good for a CDTi. 5W30 fully synthetic is best, though I have used a 5W40 fully syn before with no problems.

They're filled with 5W30 Long-Life in the factory, and should be filled with the same at service.

You can totally ****** your engine if you're using semi-syn on a long service interval.

If you have a dpf stick with the 5-30 imo. The 10-40 can be used in most of the veccys but its max 10k oil really. DPF's need the correct oil or they can go tits up. SOmething to do with the sulphur content I think.
Now I need a turbo to keep up!

Hmm...a good semi-syn would probably be OK then. I had good service from Magnatec GTD in the past.

Prior to me picking the car it was serviced and I asked what grade of oil, they informed me 10/40.

Would it be OK to change it at my next oil change to 5/30, 5/40 or should it be kept the same?

Was curious as to whether changing the grade of oil would have any effect on the engine.

If you have cut the oil and filter change to more traditional intervals, of no more than 10K miles, then you can use either fully or semi synthetic oil

If you plan to keep to long-range intervals, more than 10K miles, then continue to use fully synthetic oil only

Equally, if you plan to keep your car long-term, then continue to use fully synthetic oil
Any oil that meets this standard should be acceptable, from 0w20 to 5w40
Not many people will be able to afford 0w20 though, at nearly £20 per litre, almost no thickness to it at all!

i would stick to 5w/30 if you can afford it and stick to around 10k or yearly, been doing this for years its worked well for me.
VX have told me whilst the car is in warranty they use 5/30 after then they use 10/40...
    Its really upto you...
