Could be the lower rear arms or soft springs

I'd say almost certainly it is the rear anti-roll bar bushes that are worn. They cost about £1.00 each and if you can use a torx spanner and a can of WD40, they are fairly easy to replace yourself. Took me about 3/4 of an hour to do both, but if/when I do it again it'll be less than half that.

Yea, that's how much I paid at the dealers.

If you take off the rear wheel and follow the anti roll bar around from the short droplink that attached behind the hub, follow it around til it goes through a little metal hoop and rubber bush. That's the ARB bush that will be worn along with its partner on the other side.

I had the exact same symptoms as you, knocking over rough roads, but the knocking reduced or was eliminated when passengers were in the back. I too had the shocks replaced and the upper control arms ( although both of these were shot on my car and needed replacement ) and the knocking was still there. I changed the ARB bushes and voila!! sweet silence from the back of the car.

Give the ARB bush holder a good blast wth WD40, esp' the torx bolt, preferably 20-30mins before you start work on it, the torx bolt can be a bit siezed.

edit. As I recall, on mine the bushes looked ok on the car and didnt seem to have much movement, but when I took them off and compared them to the new ones, the old bushes had a oval hole for the bar compared to the round hole on the new bushes.

    I would 2nd the anti-roll bar bushes.

It suprising what a great job a couple of rubber bushes do , but once they have had enough they generally let you know !
