My GSI has started to "whine" over about 50mph?
Iam sure its the box? and npt the wheel bearings.
My question:
Any ideas what this can be?
If it is the box how much to repair or replace?

first off, check the tyres very carefully, then the wheel bearings....
it's not likely it's the box.. very unusual..
How?
The noise sounds like when you used to get interference on stereos, like a high pitch whine.(its not the radio checked that)
I know my box is leaking oil - but topped it up last week.
is it speed related? does it do it when the power is applied and not when you're coasting?.. are the rear tyres wearing in 'steps' of inner tread block? is the noise more front or back?.
The noise is more from the front.
Seems more noticable when cold?
The whiring noise is there all the time - but the high pitch when is on partial accelaeration then stops?
so when you put the power on it whirrs?...and it goes the instant you lift the throttle?..
if so it could very well be worn bearings in the Gbox.... but before condeming it i'd get a garage to listen to it..
In my '02 1.8 (vec-b) the gearbox was whining really bad before it exploded. Quite a cool noise tbh lol until it went bang proper style....
I could hear it faintly while not in gear, and the noise got louder with speed, (a lot louder) it never went quiet tho, Kinda like a LOUD turbo noise, it was a lot noiser on acceleration than cruising at say 60mph
Although I havent taken the box out yet to find out if it was the box or the clutch.. Its stuck in reverse at the mo as well lol. Im thinking the g/box is bummed.
