    Default Computer help needed

At the weekend we bought a laptop, mainly cos we're sick of not getting on the main desktop due to our daughter constantly wanting it !

Anyway, what I want to know is how to set up some sort of network that will allow the laptop to access certain selected folders on the main computer's hard drive, ie music and pictures mostly.

The desktop is hardwired to the wireless router (Linksys) and the laptop works on the wireless.

I would really appreciate help on this, please understand that I basically know nothing about setting up this link, so please be gentle and quite detailed

    TIA

If your network is already set up all you need to do is go to the folders on the main PC you want to share, right click and choose the "share" option. With Vista it will ask who you want to share the file with, IIRC XP doesn't, it shares with anyone on the same network.
If the laptop isn't networked yet just go to "networking" and windows will walk you through it. It's fairly simple to set up but not so easy to put into words how to do it

Just run through the networking wizards on both machines and remember to give each machine a unique name but give them the same workgroup name.

The desktop runs XP, and the Laptop runs Vista. How do I make them 'see' each other?

You'll need to run through the network setup to enable file and print services, and then you'll need to set which folders you want to share. Once they are set-up just browse via My Network Places and you should see the folders you shared out. It does not matter of they are different versions of windows.

    Thanks for the replies.

I am quite OK with making folders 'shared' but not so good on setting up the network... a bit more detail would be really helpful .....

    Please !

For Windows XP (should be similar for Vista)

go into Control Panel, select Network and Internet Connections and select Network Setup Wizard.

Click next twice, select "This computer connects thru a gateway or other computer" & Click Next

Enter a computer name for this machine & Click Next

    Click Next at workgroup name

Select Turn on File sharing & click Next

Click Next and select "Just Finish" then click Finish.

    oh and being MS...reboot.

Disclaimer.. do this at your own risk

Yes, its good to see there is a limit to Steve's knowledge. Also good to know his kids rule the home roost.

    No one knows everything.

And yes, as in every house, we make sacrifices for our kids - and that means computer access too sometimes......
