    Angry USA Fuel Prices

OK, This isn't just a boring "They're too high" post - have a read and see what you think

According to the US site here:http://www.eia.doe.gov/oil_gas/petro...home_page.html

The current average price of gasoline in the US is $3.70 - which is up $0.70 on last year.

That works out to be that it's up about £0.35 a US gallon - which works out to be just over 10p a litre.

Now, the rises at our pumps have all been solely blamed on the global price of oil - so why have our prices added almost triple what they have added in the US?

It will be around $3.70 per gallon, not £0.35 per gallon. Not been long back from the US, and the $4.00 per gallon is about the most you will pay, that equates to about £2.00 per gallon sterling.

This works out to be around £0.43p in UK money. So still considerably cheaper.

what was said is that there is a $0.70 increase in one yr, which equates to a 35pence increase per gallon in the last year, for us feul has jumped a hell of a lot more than 10p/litre

US prices have risen 23% in the last year. According to the AA average UK unleaded prices were 92.8p in April 2007. This April its 108.1p - a 16% increase.

So, the US has seen a bigger percentage increase than here (who said our increase is triple theirs???). One key reason for this is that the amount of duty we pay cushions us from the impact of the doubling of the crude oil price these last 12 months.

In America petrol is a far larger part of the pump price than here - a 100% increase in the cost of this has greater effect the larger the proportion of the pump price is actually fuel. Because duty rates here are high the amount per litre that actually goes on the fuel is lower - any cost increase on this has a lesser effect that in low duty countries. Thats why a year ago unleaded was 2nd most expensive in Europe here, its not 11th most expensive.

So, bad though things are, remember this. The oil companies have passed on only a fraction of their increased costs in buying the oil they refine. And the high rates of duty we pay have insulated us from the worst of it. Which is why despite paying more duty than they do in Germany, France, Italy etc, we now pay less for unleaded.

Diesel is of course different. We pay the same amount in duty on diesel and unleaded, in most of Europe they pay less. We also don't refine enough diesel so are a net importer, which pushes the cost price up. The gap between diesel and unleaded has grown quickly this last year despite no changes in duty solely on Diesel.

So Mr Brown, here's what you do. Windfall Tax the vast profits the oil companies are making from selling the oil they dig up at the over-inflated market prices. Tell them you will do the same every year until they invest in more diesel refining capacity. Use the windfall tax to cut diesel duty so that its more in-line with unleaded.

We can tinker round the edges. But ultimately we can't do anything to stop the onward march in crude oil prices. Fun though it might be for some of you to hapr on about duty being responsible, it isn't. As consumers across Europe are noticing now that they pay more than we do.....

Well here in OZ when we first arrived (07/06) it was 90c a litre (at the time that was about 37p a litre.

Now 2 years later its a steady $1.50 (at current exchange rates 75p)

Still cheap compared to the UK but its nearly doubled in price in 2 years - no wonder the likes of the new Commodore and Falcon are going to struggle.

Deisel is just starting to become popular! - BMW and VW advertising in the same way they did i the UK 20 years ago!! very funny!
