Spanner Light comes up if any of about 600 fault codes are present, not just the fuel filter It means there is a fault which is present and live and needs a Tech2'ing to see what the code is. Oh btw, the light wont come on when the filter needs changing but maybe when the water in the filter reaches a certain level.

you can drain it yourself easily. There is a drain on the bottom, just unscrew and catch about half a cup full and see if it's water or diesel....

I have the spanner up when the ingition is on but goes out when it is running although it came on first when driving. I stopped straight away, turned the engine off and then it started fine and noe only shows as stated above. Was going to drain the filter to check for water. To make sure is it the black cainster behind the engine.

    Any help appreciated.

yes, the fuel filter is the black canister on the bulkhead.

the light on the dash is just a reminder that it had a small fault, but that it's cleared.. it may have nothing whatsoever to do with the diesel filter thou.. a code reader is really needed to see what has actualy occured..

Mark is right, it may not be anything to do with the filter, but if it hasn't been drained then it's something you can do easily and can only help - as it should be done periodically anyway.
