Default Changing plugs on 1.8 vvt "06"

Cant find a "how 2 " on this, and will be attempting this shortly, so want to ask opinions & get some help. Bearing in mind the last car I had was a cavalier and all I had to do was whip off the ht leads and there they were!
Firstly, the metal bar that covers the coil pack is held on by two bolts at the back that look like they need an alan key, one end of this bar has a black plastic screw, which I cannot see a use for, and the other end has something connected to it, what?
secondly, I have been told that I need to take the black plastic jobbie off? is this true?, if so why & how, as the bar is visible behind the big plastic jobbie.
My last concern is loosing the rubber out of my socket after screwing the new plug in, previously I could reach it with my fingers on the cavalier, now with a long bar on my socket this wont be possible!
Any helps or tips would be appreciated.

Thanks Ste, I have a memory retention of a goldfish with a bad memory,
You said "Remove top cover on engine (2 screws at the rear and the front slides off)
remove the coil pack from on top of the plugs (just a few screws)"
Are you talking about the metal bar or the big lump of plastic? thats where I am getting confused, as the bar is behind the plastic carbunkle, and has two hex screws holding that on?

The notes were for the standard 1.8, so yours may differ slightly, but the sentiment would be the same. I don't know what the bar is that you mention, mine didn't have it !

The metal bar is for the coil pack?
