    Default Religion

I read with annoyance recently about Princess Anne's son Peter, and his catholic financee, for anybody that is unaware he was made to give up his place in the line of sucession to the throne and be ostracised from the royal family for marrying her. (incidentally in the end *she* changed *her* religion to suit so she could join their family). Can u believe the rest of us are told to be free of discrimination and sectarianism etc and the whole time attitudes like this are happening from the very top or the rule in this country? There's actually a law of parliament prohibiting the royal's marrying catholics, even Tony Blair knew fine well he had to wait till he was out of office before doing anything as radical as changing his religion. This is the 'free and modern thinking' Britain that we live in.

Totally agree. It's pathetic that we're still paying the price of Henry VIII wanting a **** away from home.

I agree, thats why catholic schools should be given up and incorporated with multi-faith state schools. In this day and age there is no need for separate catholic schools when everyone preaches that we live in a multi cultural society. Its basically Apartheid schooling.

Nah didnt miss the point , David173 is looking for something that isn't as easy as just changing a law. The 1701 Act of settlement was the basis of the above, Remember the Church Of England was formed because of the breakaway from Rome, the Queen or whoever sits on the throne must be head of the CofE. Now if the person sitting on the throne is RC, then the CofE has no sovereign and therefore no basis to exist, as the Act would have to be disolved.

The fact that the monarch must swear to defend the faith and be a member of the Anglican Communion but that a Roman Catholic monarch would, like all Roman Catholics, owe allegiance to the Pope A Catholic monarch would involve acceptance of a source of authority external to the realm

The fact that the Pope claims overall jurisdiction and therefore argues that "it would be intolerable to have, as the sovereign of a Protestant and free country, one who owes any allegiance to any other" and contends that if such situation came about "we will have undone centuries of common law, because the Roman Catholic Church does not recognise the Church of England as a proper church, a Roman Catholic monarch who abided by their faith's doctrine would be obliged to view Anglican and Church of Scotland as a false faith..

It is not as simple as you think, however Princess Anne's son has obviously looked at all the problems. He has taken the easiest path because they love each other and want to get married. After the wedding she can re-join the catholic faith no problem as the Act only covers the faith issue on the actual wedding day. In fact I believe the Duchess of Wessex (Edwards Mrs) converted to be a RC after the wedding.

I'm Catholic, and I think that it is simply a fuss about nothing. He will NEVER become King anyway as he is so far down the list, so it is all fairly meaningless practically.

On a different note, religion isn't a big part of my life anyway...
