Unhappy Traffic duty for an IT instructor

well interesting start to the day today. Driving to work (in Gosport), just about to turn into the naval base I'm working at this week, and there are a few slow cars ahead, not surprising for 8.10 in the morning. Anyway, drive slowly ahead, and cars on my side are driving around a man who is lying in the road . There are already 3 people in attendance, but I stop as well incase I can be of assistance as a first aider; grabbed my hi-vis vest from the glovebox, jump out and see if i can help. Turns out those stopped included a First Aider and nurse, so the casualty is being well cared for. The third person is already on the phone for an ambulance.

With the position of the casualty, and as it is a busy 40mph road, I start directing traffic each way. Ambulance soon arrivers, and i carry on with the traffic duty, I'm soon joined by a security guard, and together we keep the traffic moving.

The guy on the ground was in a bad way. just before the ambulance turned up, the nurse and first aider had begun CPR. Ambulance crew took over, tubed him, and the guy was soon in the back of the ambulance, just as a paramedic car also turned up. The The ambulance crew suspected a heart attack, and the security guard recognised him, and said he had collapsed before. The witnesses say he was just walking back from the local petrol station, collapsed, and in going down knocked his head on the road. Hope they medical services were able to help him...

I was there just over half an hour, and even recognised my students drive past! had about 10mins to get in to my classroom and start teaching! busy start to the day....

Guy pulled over on the M6 yesterday and then collapsed, falling into lane 1. Cars were just driving around him. He was lucky he wasn't killed. There are some very selfish people about.

It is a tricky one. There have been psychological experiments that highlight situations that when there are many people about, people will not assist/intervene, instead assuming that other people will or have assisted. Those who drove past did see 1 person on the phone and 2 by the casualty, so may not have thought they needed to stop. If no-one stopped in the situation above, then that is just appalling.

very true, just after the ambulance turned up, while i was still on my own with the traffic, the positions of the ambulance etc made it difficult for traffic in both directions to see me or the opposite direction of traffic. the ambulance crew were around the back of the ambulance, and ideally all traffic needed to be stopped. The sensible ones did stop, but those selfish ones further back, decided to drive past anyway, even though though couldn't really see past the ambulance Things were easier with 2 of us dealing with the cars.

Tell you what - It is a sobering sight when you see CPR being performed for real
