    Cool Uneven rear brake wear

    Hi,

Changing my rear brake pads a couple of days ago I was surprised to find that the n/s/r were about 20% worn, but the o/s/r was almost on the metal. Both o/s/r pads were equally worn so I guess the caliper does slide OK. Given that the rubber dust covers on the pistons are severely disintegrated n/s/r and pretty much non-existant on the o/s/r this is the cause. I had to clean and lubricate them to be able to wind them back in.

What is involved in replacing the rubbers? Once the pads are off again, do they simply slip on, or do I have to start dismantling more? Am I right to assume this is the fix?

    Cheers

first off, you can't buy the rubbers seperatly.. it's a whole new caliper time.. but the good news is they aren't MEGA money... the NSR seems to be seized, or the pads are rusted into their slides.. well worth really going to town on the pad carrier bracket with a scraper and a wire brush to get it back to bare metal so the pads can more freely, and apply some coppergrease to the pads 'ears' and backs to help them move.. also check the slide pins are clean and smear them with copper grease as well..

if the calipers are rusted thou, it's replacement time..

Well that probably explains why the previous owner didn't sort them then.
I've wire-brushed and copper-greased everything in sight - always do

The pads on the offending wheel were both near-as down to metal on metal (thankfully the disc looks OK), that suggests everything moves OK when the piston applies pressure. Looks like the piston doesn't fully release when the brakes are off. Surely there has to be a way to fix this without major new parts - what a waste of materials - and money!

    Thanks for the feedback tho

if the internals of the caliper have rusted then i'm afraid that if it won't 'work' back into life it will have to be new units..

Can anyone tell me, once you've got the brake calliper off, how do you remove the worn pads? It's the first time I've done this.

replace the rubber boots asap as I have recently had to pay £431 for a new rear caliper that seized solid along with new pads and discs, all because the rubber boot was missing.

Let me know if you want rear calipers as I can get them at hell of lot less than VX. Used but off nearly new cars.
