Default Topping up engine oil... engine warm or cold?

Checked the oil level on my Signum yesterday and it was a little low, so I'm planning a trip to the dealers later to get myself a liter of oil. I've never had to top up a car with oil before, so excuse me if I ask a stupid question...

Do you top up when the engine is warm (mentioned in the owners manual is that you should check the level about 5 minutes after the engine has been run at operating temperature) or when the engine is stone cold? My gut feeling says the former, but I rather confirm it here before I mess it up

    Ta!

i always check them cold or if the engine is warm, at least 5 mins after the engine has run to allow the oil to drain back into the sump to give the correct reading....doing it too quick will give you a false lower reading..

on the topic of topping up oil, what is the norm for a 1.9 CDTi using oil.

Ive done 4,123 miles since my service should it need a top up?

According to the manual on my 2.0 Turbo the oil should always be checked when warm.

I too had always checked it when cold too.

our old 150 never used a drop..

to be fair..most engines these days hardly use a thing...but you do need to check it more often than every 4,000 miles....try at least once a month..
